 今年44岁的游女士是广西宜州人，1998年因出现四肢乏力麻木、无法行走及视物模糊、吞咽困难、尿潴留、排便困难等症四处求医，于1999年被广西医科大学第一附属医院确诊为多发性硬化症。 6年来，曾先后7次复发，病情逐步加重，经糖皮质激素治疗获得一定的疗效，但长期使用并发的类固醇性糖尿病，给游女士带来了肺部感染和尿路感染等副作用，疾病使患者出现了严重的焦虑和郁抑状态，记忆力减退，情绪低落，几乎失去生活信心。
游女士于2004年1月29日再次入住广西医科大学一附院神经内科，该科的专家们经过会诊，决定在前期利用造血干细胞移植成功治疗三例重症肌无力的基础上，再次与血液科携手合作，于2004年5月13日为游女士实施自体外周血造血干细胞移植术。治疗一个月后，游女士视物模糊、吞咽困难消失，肢体乏力和麻木症状改善，大小便正常，生活自理。复查头颅及脊髓MRI、诱发电位等指标与原有病灶比较明显好转，每天还可以到医院花园广场散步1－2个小时。
多发性硬化症是一种以中枢神经系统白质脱髓鞘为主要病变的自身免疫性疾病，传统的治疗采用皮质激素、β-干扰素、环磷酰胺等进行免疫干预，部分患者可以获得暂时缓解，部分患者复发与缓解交替出现或进行性发展，最终导致死亡，因此多发性硬化症的治疗尚属当代医学界有待突破的一大难题。广西医科大学一附院的医务人员勇敢地向这一难题发起挑战，突破了广西首例外周血造血干细胞移植治疗多发性硬化症获得成功的记录，这标志着我院治疗多发性硬化症已达到国内先进水平。
